Safco Brand Aluminum Hanging Drawing Clamps

If you're looking for Blueprint Storage, or are wanting to organize your blueprints or drawings, try using Safco Planhold Brand Aluminum Hanging Drawing Clamps. They are sold in various sizes (lengths). The most popular size (length) is the 30" Clamps. The reason is because most engineering or construction drawings are prepared on 24"x36" or 30"x42" media. With a 30" clamp, you can clamp either size of drawing without any problems. The 24" side of a 24"x36" drawing will be held by the clamp and you will have some overhang but only 3" on each end of the clamp, which is not a bad thing. Safco Drawing Clamps, or Mayline Brand Drawing Clamps are interchangeable on most Blueprint Drawing Racks. Remember, the 30" drawing clamps are the most popular.

Best Bang for the Buck Rotary Laser Level

The best bang for the buck Rotary Laser Level in our opinion is the Pacific Laser Systems Rotary PLSHVR-505R Kit. It comes with everything you'd need to work indoors and outdoors, including a Laser Detector, Tripod, and Grade Rod. PLS manufacturers a really nice sturdy grade of product. The lasers case is not cheap feeling, and it feels good in your hand. The units just work when you turn them on, without fail from what we've seen. The 505R is a new model that PLS started making a few months ago and the demand for it has been high. They used to make a model 500 that also fit the bill for quality to price ratio, but now with their new 505 model (the "R" stands for Red since it has a red laser beam) they have improved features and reliability.

Most people don't complain, they just move on

I sometimes think some retailers, or any business for that matter, has the thought of if you don't hear them complain, then we must be doing something right....WRONG! The fact is, most people don't complain, they just move on. This has been a firm belief of mine since I started EngineerSupply back in 1999. Knowing this has always helped me grow EngineerSupply into what it is today. We don't give our customers reason to complain. The moment we receive a phone call from a customer, or an order, we start to working for them (actually we have usually been working for the customer before the moment we get the order, as we're always building quotes, answering questions about products, and educating customers on how our products work, many times long before the customer places their order). We have systems in place to track their order from start to finish, finish being the customer received the product delivered on time and at the correct location, and undamaged. Sounds simple, but it's not. It can be a challenge moving products like Blueprint Storage, Surveying Equipment and Supplies, Drafting Tools and Equipment from point A to point B, tracking it from hub to terminal, then watching each orders' tracking number to make sure it was signed for and delivered to the correct location and on time. Theres many other facets of customer service but this one stands out in my mind as what people are wanting. We always remember that if a customer doesn't complain then it doesn't necessarily mean that they're happy.

Blueline Machines are Reliable and Economical

Blueprint Machines are reliable and offer crisp prints at an economical price. Blueline machines are used to make a print from an original document made from vellum (sometimes known a "trans-bond") or any material that allows light to pass through. Diazo copiers use Diazo-coated papers, vellums, and films, which are readily available and reasonably priced at EngineerSupply. The ammonia, used by most Diazo copier systems, is low in cost and environmentally safe. Diazit Blueprint Copiers have an inherently simple design with relatively few complicated parts. Because of this they require little maintenance. They are very reliable pieces of equipment that provide years of useful life with little down time. Most Diazo blue line machines remain in use for well over 20 years with a high degree of reliability and little down time. EngineerSuppply has all machines in stock now and can ship out within 48 hours. There has never been a better time to buy a Diazit Blueprint Copier.

Reflective Safety Vests

About a week ago, I took some sample products home to test and use to see how they worked (or not). One of the sample products I had brought home was a Reflective Surveying Safety Vest by Seco (Seco brand products are usually awesome and quality made). I was going to walk our dog early this morning and decided to slip the safety vest on and see how well the reflective material would work. I was surprised at what I found happen. It was very early this morning before the sun had come up and people leaving their homes headed for work were driving down our street. To my amazement, they would slow way down, much slower than I've ever seen traffic on our street. Usually they fly by without much regard to anyone walking and seem to forget about the pedestrian has the right-of-way idea. With the reflective safety vest on, they began slowing down far in advance, which made it a very nice walk. I felt much safer with their slower speeds, but also realized that a new safety vest, one that is to the latest safety requirements, really made the difference in my dog and I being safe while walking. The vest worked so well I am now considering walking our dog before the sun comes up just so I can benefit from traffic using their headlights. It was safer walking in the dark than it was in the day time, due to the reflective strips on the safety vest! I would recommend that Land Surveying Company owners invest in safety vests for their surveying crews that meet newer safety requirements. Investing in your employees safety is not only important, but it helps protect your business from losing an employee and hopefully against law suits.

Virginia Begins Licensure Program for Surveyor Photogrammetrists

Virginia Begins Licensure Program for Surveyor Photogrammetrists
Limited-time “grandfathering” period for current practitioners

EngineerSupply wants to ensure it customer’s are up to date on important legislation regarding their profession, because of that dedication we would like to share the following announcement from the Department of Professional & Occupational Regulation (www.dpor.virginia.gov/dporweb)

Virginia law now requires individuals who practice land surveying using photogrammetry or other remote-sensing technology to hold a state license.

The legislature established the Surveyor Photogrammetrist licensure requirement during the 2005 General Assembly Session. The Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects (APELSCIDLA Board) developed regulations effective December 1, 2008, to administer the licensure program.

The new state regulations provide for a 12-month license examination waiver for surveyor photogrammetrists. The waiver allows existing photogrammetrists – individuals who practice land surveying using photogrammetry or other remote-sending technology – to be “grandfathered” into the licensure program.

Applicants under the “grandfather” provision may qualify for licensure based on documented education and experience in the field. Licenses will be issued to qualified individuals who apply between December 1, 2008 and November 30, 2009. After the 12-month grandfathering period expires, applicants must meet additional requirements including examinations.

Applications for the Surveyor Photogrammetrist license are available online at www.dpor.virginia.gov or by contacting the APELSCIDLA Board office at (804) 367-8512.

Current practitioners may waive the examination requirement by submitting an application for a grandfather license no later than November 30, 2009. As of December 1, 2009, all surveyor photogrammetrist license applicants must qualify for and pass examination in order to obtain a license.

Phil Says "Six More Weeks of Winter!" so make the most out of winter

Every February 2nd, Americans celebrate one of the most unique holidays I can think of, Groundhog Day. I’m not sure how familiar you are with ground hog’s day but crowds start to gather at 3 am, and wait anxiously for the groundhog predict when spring will come. Most of the groundhogs this year have already made their prediction, and the consensus is six more weeks of winter.

I know winter can be a hard time for the surveying and construction industries, especially with the current economic troubles plaguing our nation. Many are looking forward to spring and the promise it holds for increased work opportunities. Instead of thinking of winter as a disadvantage, think of it as an opportunity. Winter can be a great time to prepare for summer. With spring just around the corner here’s a few steps you can do now to make sure you’re ready…

Read up- start with some trade magazines, industry blogs (like engineersupply.blogspot.com), catch up on new industry developments, and consider taking some continuing education classes. Many surveying associations offer classes that cover everything from surveying classes about new industry developments, legal concerns, and techniques to business classes to help surveyors with their own business.

Make sure all you equipment is in good condition. Make any needed repairs or replacements. EngineerSupply.com carries a wide variety of equipment at great prices. We are to help you get the products you need, with great prices and excellent service! In January of this year new regulations made for surveying safety vests (check out our blog for more information.) Check your safety vests to make sure they are in compliance. Remember that faded vests might not be compliant with the new safety regulations.

Consider alternate sources for business. Check with local government agencies to see if they have any outstanding bids and consider submitting a quote. Make new business connections. Consider social media sites like “Facebook.com”, “Twitter.com” and “Linkedin.com.” This can be a great resource for tapping into social business networks. (EngineerSupply.com can be found on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.)

Set goals with your employees; make it a vision for the company. Choose something attainable and work together. This is great for team building and morale. Consider making minor changes to your business to make it more cost efficient. Here at EngineerSupply we are always conscious of conserving. Not only to decrease business expenses but to conserve natural resources. Take small steps like shutting off the light whenever you leave or reusing old paper as scrap paper (just make sure it doesn’t have any sensitive information on it!)

As I’ve said in previous posts, Surveying Associations are a great resource for surveyors! The winter months are a great time to get involved. Many offer great services like continuing education, trade shows and business directories and that’s just some of the unique services that they offer.

These are just some of the steps you can take now to help your business flourish this year. Remember that spring will be coming soon so take advantage of these winter months to help you make the most of it.

Surveying Equipment Theft Solutions

During these hard economic times the surveying community has seen an increase in equipment theft. Stolen surveying equipment costs time, money and effort not only due to the loss of equipment but in the measures to replace it. Among the most commonly stolen tools are GPS and robotic equipment as well as total stations. We here at EngineerSupply have heard of stories of attempted surveying equipment theft. Don’t wait till after your equipment is stolen to set up security precautions. Thieves have been known to steal surveying equipment from offices, vehicles, sheds, job sites and from surveyors at gun point. Stay aware of crime trends in your area and notify your employees. Also consider enacting written security guidelines for your company before a theft occurs.

There are several precautionary steps you can take. Take pictures of your equipment and keep a list of their make, models, and serial numbers. Provide a copy of this list to your insurance company. Make sure your insurance covers all your equipment in every area of use (in the main office, company truck and on the job site). Discuss different coverage options and premiums. Label equipment with your name and contact information. Engraving and branding are the most permanent solutions. Label all the accessories (tripod, data collector, etc…) and parts (cases, batteries, etc…). This will help track down your equipment if it falls into the wrong hands.

Secure your equipment. I have heard some ingenious ways surveyors have done this. Such contraptions include locks, chains and even spiral corkscrews used to secure dog chains. Make sure that items in your truck are locked and secured to the truck. If you need to stop at a store, park where you can see the truck from the window. If this is not possible consider leaving someone with the vehicle while you run inside.

Leica Geosystems, Sokkia, Topcon and Trimble have built-in theft deterrent features on some of their equipment, ranging from unique PIN numbers to preset areas of operation. Sokkia also offers a theft database and will keep an eye out for any unusual orders for parts, accessories and manuals for items reported stolen.

If your equipment is stolen it is important to act quickly! Most thieves will not keep stolen merchandise but will want to move it quickly. Call local surveying equipment dealers, pawn shops, the manufacturer, report the theft to the police and also check with your state surveying association. Many surveying associations have systems in place to help surveyors report stolen equipment. Trace.com and pobonline.com are online sites that can be used to search and report stolen or lost items.

Keep in mind that surveying equipment theft involves two parts, those stealing the equipment and those willing to buy it. If you are thinking about purchasing used equipment, please make sure it is not stolen. Be careful when the equipment is not sold with the original accessories from the manufacturer like manuals and cases. Check the serial number on online theft databases such as trace.com and pobonline.com. Also check with your state surveying association as they might have a theft database. If you do find stolen equipment please report it to the police.

Of course, we recommend that you purchase new surveying equipment from a reputable factory authorized dealer like EngineerSupply. You're buying a piece of mind, knowing that it comes with the manufacturer’s warranty and you know that it is not stolen.

How to Build a Fence with Ease using a Laser or Optical Instrument

One of the most challenging aspects when building a fence is to make sure it is straight when you lay it out before construction. This is important not only to insure then fence looks good but will be easier to build and more sturdy. Taking the correct first steps in building a fence can save time, money and energy. The traditional way to ensure a fence was straight was to lay the four corner posts and tie string. This works well but can be very tedious and doesnt work well on large areas you're wanting to fence in. The string must be pull taut, which can be very difficult if you are building a fence in a large area. The string will be affected by the wind which could cause your measurements to be inaccurate.

EngineerSupply offers many tools that are useful for constructing a fence. Wondering how to build a fence and what tools to use? Of course, you need a strong back and the trusty pole-hole diggers, or if you're lucky a tractor with an PTO-driven Auger Attachment. There are two different options available for layout tools, laser and optical. An optical instrument such as the David White LP6-20NXL Level is set up on a tripod and should be pointed along the length of the fence. The user can then look through the eye piece to discover the correct positioning for the fence posts and then make necessary adjustments.

Another alternative is to use a construction rotary laser to lay the fence posts. Construction lasers emit a straight beam that can be used to align the fence but will need to be used with a detector when doing exterior work. By running this detector along the length of the fence you will be able to identify straight and plumb. Make sure the rotary laser you are using has a vertical feature so you can lay the instrument on its side for a vertical plane. The AGATEC 510-GC (11-0324) is a Horizontal and Vertical Rotary Laser. The self leveling feature insures that the reference line is level and plumb. It also comes standard with rechargeable batteries. A laser line generator is generally a less expensive alternative but can only be used on smaller job sites.

Handheld Spray Paint Wand

So the other day I was with a group of friends making some banners for a local event. We all eagerly arrived with blank banners, spray paint and stencils. But after the first half hour the excitement started to die down as we were all suffering from aching fingers from the spray nozzle. We tried all sorts of things to relieve our aching fingers. We switched to the opposite hand, used our thumbs or stood back and insisted we were “supervising.” Then one of my friends had a novel idea. He walked to his car and got out his handheld spray paint wand. It was wonderful! He had just come from work and happened to have it in the back of his car. (I think it might have slightly backfired on him since we all stopped work and watched him spray paint.) The spray paint wand worked great! It was faster, easier and looked better. It got me to thinking, how many of our tools can be used in everyday circumstances. Has tools left in your car ever been a “lifesaver”? Please share your stories! I’d love to hear them!

Seco Safety Vests

When working in construction, road work, surveying and related fields your day is not consistent. Half the day you might be tromping through the woods, and the other half you might be recording points in an open field. Seco safety vests not only boost your visibility, they help you stay safe, comfortable and healthy. A pretty outlandish claim for a safety vest, keep reading to find out how.

What most people don’t know is that bundling up too much can actually be dangerous. If people make themselves too warm the excess body heat will cause the body to produce perspiration. Perspiration will hinder the garments ability to insulate. The moisture trapped inside the clothing can then become cold, which can eventually lead to chills and even hypothermia. Perspiration will not only affect your body temperature but can cause dehydration.

Seco has taken these factors into consideration and has a brilliant solution. Seco has created safety vests made with outlast thermo-molecules. This special space technology will adapt to your body temperature and regulate it. It will provide warmth without the bulk. Specially design theromolecules absorb and release heat as needed. Because the fabric reacts to your body temperature it keeps you warm in the winter in cool in the summer. With outlast thermo-molecules you don’t need to worry about a different vest for the summer and winter. So when it comes to working outside this winter remember the key to working to staying healthy is to regulate your body temperature. Take a look at our selection of safety vests feature outlast technology and stay safe this season!

New Safety Vest Requirements

New high-visibility garment regulations taking effect on November 25th will affect many professionals, including road crews, surveying crews, crossing guards, delivery truck drivers, tow truck drivers, forestry works, construction crews, flagging crews, law enforcement personnel;, utility crews, toll both operators, emergency personnel and anyone work on or near a road or construction equipment.

According to the FHWA anyone whose duties expose them to traffic or working on or near construction equipment are required to wear high visibility clothing. EngineerSupply carries an extended line of safety vests that meet the new government regulations, including Seco utilities vests. The Seco safety vests were created with the California DOT to comply with the new regulations.

When ordering a safety vest make sure it is compliant with ANSI/ISEA regulations. The vests are then assigned a class by their level of visibility, class 1, class 2 and class 3. (Class 3 is the most visible.) According to the new regulation, “All workers within the right-of-way of a Federal-aid highway who are exposed either to traffic… or to construction equipment within the work area shall wear high-visibility safety apparel.” that complies with ANSI/ISEA 107-2004, class 2 or 3.

It is recommended to go with the class 3 safety vests if you have any doubt as to which class you fall into. If someone is injured and they were wearing the wrong safety vest the employer could be held liable. If any of your current safety vests are faded this could be putting you or your employees at risk and it is recommended that you replace them.

This is only a reference guide and is not an exhaustive list of the new regulations. For more information on the new regulations please visit,

Inverted Marking Paint

Inverted Marking Paint is a great tool for land surveyors, utility workers, city governments, aerial surveying, contractors, ground surveying and much more. Marking paint is unique because it is inverted spray paint, also known as "upside down paint". Most spray paints are used by holding the can upright and pressing down the top. This can be tedious and very tiring to your finger if you need to make a lot of marking lines. Inverted spray paint can be inserted into a making wand to dispense that paint squeeze the handle of the wand. This allows the inverted marking paint to be applied easily in a broad area with less fatigue. It can be used for pavement marking, marking utilities, marking surveyor’s points, marking utilities and painting survey reference lines. We carry two of the lead names in marking paint, Aervoe survey marking paint and Krylon inverted marking paint. Both the Aervoe and Krylon marking paint are sold by the case to save you time and money. If you need a Material Safety Data Sheets (msds) please contact us and we can provide that to you.

APWA Utility Color Codes
The American Public Works Association (APWA) recommends the following guidelines be used when using marking supplies to mark underground utility line locations.

White = Proposed Excavation
Pink = Temporary Survey Markings
Red = Electric Power Lines, Cables, Conduit and Lighting Cables
Yellow = Gas, Oil, Steam, Petroleum or Gaseous Materials
Orange = Communication, Alarm or Signal Lines, Cables or Conduit
Blue = Potable Water, Water Lines
Purple = Reclaimed Water, Irrigation and Slurry Lines
Green = Sewer and Drain Lines

Why are these colors used?
Often, you will see these colors used to identify utility lines in cities and on a university campus. Sometimes city or campus utility departments will paint the tops (such as manhole lids, or storm sewer drop-inlets) of their utilities these colors before an aerial survey is flown so that the people creating the maps can identify the type of utility by color.

Large File Folders for Drawings

Ever wanted to organize and protect your large drawings and maps? Try Large File Folders for Drawings and Maps here.

Measuring an Irregular Shape

If you want to measure an an irregular shape, try using an instrument called a "planimeter". They work by using your hands to roll the instrument around on a scaled drawing or map, around on a closed loop to find the area of the shape. Just to give an idea of how planimeters are used, golf course designers use planimeters to figure golf course fairways and golf course greens. Sometimes Doctors use them to measure an area of something like a tumor on an x-ray taking measuring at intervals in time to see expansion or contraction of the area. I've even heard of shoe manufacturers disassembling a shoes' leather, then taking the area measurements of the leather, then once again after the shoe has been worn, which gives the designer an idea of material stretch. To summarize, planimeters are great area measuring tools.

Crain Surveyors Series (SVR) Rectangular-Oval Leveling Rod

The Crain Surveyors Series SVR Rectangular-Oval Leveling Rod is the best we've seen in a long time. It's heavy duty, and the moment you put one in your hand you know its a real tool and not some inexpensive junk. With an included nylon carrying case, you can't go wrong with this product.

In addition to being a leveling rod on the front, the SVR rod has a measuring scale on the back (with the exception of the two-scaled rods) that allow the user to read overall height measurements at eye level, which is useful in making clearance and height measurements. Also on the back-side with the measuring scale, there are alternate 1' red and white markings that are suitable for stadia purposes.

Sonin Inchmate 2000

Many people working in the construction industry and related fields know that small mathematical mistakes can cause big problems. Simple equations like adding areas, finding concrete weight and volume, finding product costs, calculating stairs or roofs can be very tedious. Calculations with fractions and pitch must be done by hand, not only taking more time to complete but also more vulnerable to mistakes. The Sonin Inchmate 2000 includes many features that make it a great tool for the work place. In the following paragraphs I’m going to outline some of the features that make the Inchmate such a unique and indispensible tool.

Measurement Conversion
The Inchmate allows you to easily convert between different measurements. Convert measurement at the push of a button between any forms of measurement in the same category.
  • Weight-Tons, pounds, kilograms and metric tons
  • Liquid-Gallons, fluid ounces, liters, and milliliters
  • Dimensions- miles, yards, feet, inches, kilometers, yards, centimeters and millimeters
Triangle keys
The triangle keys are very useful when working with roofs, raked walls, stair cases, areas and much more! It will help calculate risers, number of treads, stair inclination and much more. the Sonin Inchmate can help you find rise, run, pitch or diagonal line of a roof. It even has special instructions to walk you through these calculations.

Cost
Cost is another unique feature. To use the cost key enter the cost per increment and then enter the increment you will need. The Inchmate will automatically display the cost for you.

Fractions
Fractions are very prevalent when working with inches. And working with fractions can be a tedious. Converting the denominator, reducing fractions to the simplest form, adding, subtracting dividing and multiplying are all common functions and use time and manpower. Mistakes can easily be made. With the Sonin Inchmate calculations can be preformed quickly and reliably.

Paperless Tape Review
Forget the answer to a calculation? The paperless tape review will store the last 30 entries. At the push of a button you can scroll back through recent calculations.

Detailed Instructions
Want some example calculations to help walk you through how to use the different functions this tool can do? There are sample questions in the users manual that show you step by step how to complete calculations. The user’s manual describes the function of each key. It also has step by step instruction on how to solve some hard and unique equations.

Parallel Drawing Bars and Drafting Straightedges

Despite the many advances in CAD Drafting, Manual Drafting is still very popular with many Architects, Engineers, Designers and Graphic Artists as well as Schools and Universities. Straightedges, also known as Parallel Bars, are a useful tool for drafting. They provide a horizontal guide for drawing and are used to support drafting triangles, stencils, and can even be used to help cut paper. We carry two brands of straightedges, Mayline and Spiroll. They are both exceptional straightedges here are some highlights of their most popular features.

Mayline Parallel Straightedges
Mayline has 6 optional straight edge lengths ranging from 30” to 60”. Above-board mounting hardware is included.

Mayline Straightedges have 2 options for wheels Delrin and Metal. The Delrin rollers are made from plastic and are best for use on materials such as Mylar. The metal rollers are made of chrome and are best for use on vellum and other paper medium. The rollers alternate the full length of the straightedge and allow the straightedge to ride smoothly over the surface of the drawing.

Mayline also has an E-Z grip feature. This is a "cap" that mounts on the top of the parallel straightedge and makes it easy to pick up and move the straightedge. This is helpful if you are using inks and do not want the straightedge to smudge your work before it dries.

Mayline also offers an optional “armor-edge”. This is a durable thin strip of metal that is on the leading edge of the straightedge. It should be used when cutting with a razor blade.

Spiroliner Parallel Straightedges
The Spiroliner is a parallel straight edge that can be used to ruling or cutting. It is made in the USA and come with Top mounts so it can be attached, partial or full length, to any drafting board. The secure mounting system insures that your straight edge will remain in alignment no matter what height you have it set at. All Spiroliner straightedges also come with a one-year warranty against manufacturer's defects.

Eliminates Smudging:
Elevated slightly above the surface of the drawing table, Spiroliner does not contact the surface of the drawing. It glides on wheels located at each end of the structural extruded aluminum blade. No rollers in the bottom of the blade to smudge or damage your drawing.

Removable Replaceable Transparent Ruling Edge:
The extruded acrylic ruling edge accommodates technical and ruling pens, lead pencils, felt tipped pens, etc. The acrylic edge is replaceable

Nick-Proof Cutting Edge:
The structural aluminum Spiroliner blade has a durable hardened anodized surface providing a cutting straightedge which is virtually "nick-proof." Relocate the transparent ruling edge to the lower groove of the blade to expose the metal cutting edge.

Dual Brakes:
Two brakes are standard on all Spiroliners. Use one to prevent parallel rule from sliding down inclined board surface, locking the other brake frees both hands for drawing.

Surveyors Field Books, Engineers Journal Books

Despite the many recent developments in digital point recording, surveying field books are still a staple in the surveying industry. A field book can be used to record important points which will be a vital tool when deciphering the points collected. Use a survey field book to record important information in the field that you will need to later reference once back in the office.

Field books come in a variety of different formats for the many different methods of use. There are Mining Transit Books, Transit field books, Level book, field book, Engineers field books and Cross section field books. Each type of book features a different grid to make it ideal for its intended use. They also come in a variety of different sizes including Pocket and King sized as well as one job field books. The pocket sized field book is small and portable and the one job field book is ideal for students who need a smaller field book for classes, regardless if they go to a high school, college, community college or university.

Drafting Tables for Back Pain

Many people experience back pain during their lifetime and many have back injury that results in prolonged or either permanent back pain. We have found that many doctors have recommended tall desks and chairs to patients that must return to work. The height of a drafting table works well since you don't have to get up and down as far when sitting. The ability to leave your legs and feet extended help alleviate back pain as well.

Machine Control Laser Detectors

Machine Control Laser Detectors are mounted to heavy equipment (Backhoes, Trackhoes, Dozers) and they help the equipment operator know when he or she is "at grade". The laser detector will show them when they are at the level of the laser so they know either they need to take out more dirt (cut), or put in more dirt (fill). A rotary laser is mounted on a tripod somewhere on the construction site out of the way and the detector is mounted to the arm or bucket on the equipment. Machine Control Laser Detectors are usually larger than the normal detector, due to most rough grading jobs are of rough terrain, which means that you benefit from the detector having a larger"window" to detect the laser line. Equipment operators keep their eye on the detector and it indicates when its "on grade". Being "on grade" means you are "at level", or "on level". This is terminology commonly used in the field of excavation, grading, surveying, sitework, and construction.

    Green Beam Rotary Lasers

Green Beam Rotary Lasers are relatively new to the construction and surveying industry. Most people I’ve spoken with have not used a green laser but have heard of the famous “brighter beam”. During our last product demo from Pacific Laser Systems (PLS) I had the chance to see their new PLSHVR-500G first hand. The PLS rep set up the standard red laser and the new green laser in the hallway so we could see just how bright the beam was. Glancing down the hall I was amazed at what I saw. The red beam was visible but the green beam was super bright and crisp. In fact green lasers are 4X brighter than conventional red lasers. Plus the human eye is more sensitive to the color green. Some people are still a little reluctant when it comes to investing a new laser so below I’ve addressed the most common questions I’ve received from customers interested in a green rotary laser.

“What difference does the color make?” Red rotary lasers will travel farther and because of this they are more ideal for outdoor use. Green rotary lasers have a brighter beam making them more ideal for indoor use where the beam should still be visible to the naked eye.

“Will they work outside?” Yes! Even though green lasers are most suitable for indoor use they will still work outside. All the green models I’ve seen match their red counterparts as far as accuracy is concerned. The range of a green laser is shorter than that of a red laser. But for more info on that you will need to compare specific models.

“Will I have to buy all new equipment?” as far as hardware is concerned, tripod, pole etc., there is no difference. The green beam is different from the red so a red detector will not work with a green laser. Most of the green lasers can be purchase as a kit that will include a detector. And extra detectors are also sold separately.

    Blueprint Filing and Storage

Wanting to file and store your Blueprints and get organized? By storing your blueprints in a organized manner, you have much to gain. Efficiency levels increase, security can increase depending on which storage solution you select, and a higher level of professionalism can appear. The first question we always ask is, "Do you want to store your blueprints rolled or unrolled?". From there, if you want to store your drawings rolled, theres corrugated vertical roll files, corrugated blueprint roll files, wire vertical roll files, and steel roll files. If you want to store your drawings unrolled, you can have the choice of flat storage such as blueprint flat files, or hanging them in a vertical fashion like with hanging file centers also known as blueprint stands or blueprint racks, and corrugated flat files. Also, theres other ways to store and protect your drawings with products like blueprint covers or protectors, and drawing portfolios and cases. Hopefully we have gotten you to thinking about the various ways to store and protect your blueprints, drawings, artwork, and any other large document.

If you do a lot of CAD work, reduce neck tension with a Monitor Arm

If you do a lot of CAD work, your can significantly reduce neck tension by replacing your flat panels legs with a Single Mount Monitor Arm. I tried one here at EngineerSupply with my 22" LCD Widescreen and my neck felt just fine after 10 hours of work. I wish I had purchased a monitor rm years ago. It's pretty simple, once you get the arm, you assemble it using either the grommet base, or the clamp base, both types are included with the ESI brands of arms. You screw the grommet type to your desk or work surface, or you use the clamp type if you don't want to drill holes in your surface. The ESI hardware is very heavy and thick which makes for a sturdy mount. Plus, they include all sorts of bolts, and allen wrenches. Also included are wire holders that mount underneath each arm, and they hold the wires and hide them which makes the appearance very neat!

Then, once the pole is secured, its very sturdy, you then slide the monitor arm down and clamp it at the height you want it. The arm I use holds my monitor up much higher than the factory base or stand it came with, which is stored in my closet for later use if I ever decided to mount my monitor back on its' factory stand. Then, once the arm is up, you can rotate, turn, tilt, and put the monitor in literally ANY position. I put my monitor up higher than normal so the middle of my monitor is almost at eye height since this seems to make my neck the straightest and most comfortable. I was very surprised at my higher energy level and mood when going home the first day I used the monitor arm! I highly recommend a monitor arm. I know I'll never work on a flat screen LCD again without one. Remember, if you want to mount two monitors, buy the dual-arm version. Same goes for three monitors, you should buy the three-arm version.
