We're Shooting Grades and Taking Elevation

There are various types of rods used in the land surveying, construction stake-out, and site prep industry available. There are various types of rods are Grade Rods, Survey Elevation Rods, Lenker Rods, Level Rods, Cut/Fill Rods, but they all boil down to being used to figure elevation for various reasons. These reasons could be shooting grades for highway work such as grading a road bed and ditches, or installing storm sewers and drop inlets, or installing sanitary sewer lines and manholes. Other reasons could be setting a septic tank underground at the right elevation so there's enough fall from the sewer that exits a building over to the tank. Any time you need to measure from a known level reference, as when using a transit level, auto level, or laser level, a grade rod can be invaluable. A "Smart Rod" that Agatec makes is one worth looking at as well.

Cut-and-Fill Rods are used to quickly figure out if a dozer needs to cut or fill in a particular area. These are great tools for construction stake-out and grading contractors. One cut-and-fill rod we carry is the Crain One-Shot Grade Rod.

Measuring Rods also double as a grade rod. Measuring Rods are rods you can use in a vertical or horizontal fashion to measure distance. Great examples of uses are a land surveyor that shoots grades and then quickly needing a measurement of a sidewalk width, or the height of a building. Another example would be

Pocket Rods can be handy on any construction site when you're wanting to take a quick measurement for elevation from level.

So there you have it, a quick run-down of the various types of rods used by land surveyors, grading contractors, construction stake-out folks, building contractors, and anyone wanting to find work from elevation.

Manhole Cover Lid Removal Tool

Anytime you want to safely and quickly remove a manhole lid, try a Manhole Cover Removal Tool. Some folks call it a "Manhole Pick" and some call it a "Manhole Lid Removal Tool", but its all the same. Inspecting manholes, measuring inverts, discovering flow direction, it all requires that you open a manhole and take a look and getting a lid removed is not easy. Sometimes some overlapping asphalt will make a manhole lid difficult to remove, but either way a Manhole Pick will quickly and easily remove a lid.

The Leica Disto D8 Laser Distance Tool

The Leica Disto D8 is a laser distance tool that surprises most people the first time they use one due to all the features and functions it has. Yes, its an investment but one that quickly pays off if you spend any time daily taking measurements on the job. Feature that typically surprise first-time users are the 360° tilt sensor allows the Disto D8 the ability to measure angles without being able to see around obstacles, for example when measuring the height of a tree, or measuring the height of a window on the 4th level of a building. Another nice feature is the Digital Pointfinder which allows the user to zoom viewing through the Distos screen and see a target and then set the point which is very helpful for long distance measuring. When you add in other features like Bluetooth, a measuring range of 650 feet, and a manufacturers 3-year warranty, the Leica Disto D8 is a serious tool for the serious user.

Google PowerMeter

Interested in viewing how much power you use? The Google PowerMeter app is free, as most Google services are, and if your electrical utility service provider works with Google you can view the power usage of your home or office. Or, buy a device that is made to be compatiable with Google PowerMeter such as the TED 5000. Using Google Power Meter can help you save money by allowing one to figure out where they are using their power. The real benefit to using this service would be to turn off as many power-using devices in your space as possible, then turn them on and off one at a time so you can see which devices are power hogs and which are'nt. You can also maybe see peak times and maybe try various things to reduce your power consumption, such as opening curtains to get sunlight in, insulating doors and windows, using power-saving light bulbs, and so on. The idea is, if you know how much power you're using, the chances are you'll start learning to save.

Measuring Tools

There are so many different types of measuring tools currently out on the market, it’s hard to know which one to choose. If you need help knowing how to measure something and which tool is most suited for the job read below to see a summary of the different types of measuring equipment that we carry,

Distance Measuring Wheels are excellent tools for measuring long distances in a hurry. To use, simply reset the counter, place the wheel at the point you want to start measuring, and roll in a straight direction to the stopping point, then read the counter. Small Wheels are ideal for indoor measuring, Medium Wheels for both indoor and outdoor, and Large Wheels are ideal for outdoor measurements only.

Laser Distance Measuring Tools, AKA "Electronic Tape Measures", "Laser Distance Finders" or "Digital Measuring Devices", offer the most accurate measuring. You simply point the laser distance measuring devices dot at a target like a wall, a house, a utility pole, nearly any object, and the device will show the distance on its LCD screen. These measuring devices are true time savers and are very accurate.

We offer a variety of Measuring Tapes, including pocket tapes, long tapes and specialty tapes. Our long tapes are available in steel or fiberglass. Pocket Measuring Tapes are handy to have around. With an enclosed case and belt clip, they are easy to carry and easy to use. We offer many different units of measure like metric, feet and inches, and feet and tenths.

Measuring Rod Rulers are very handy tools. Not only can they be used in a vertical fashion, but can be used horizontally as well when, for example, measuring the distance from the center of a manhole to back of curb. Some rods also have Surveying Grade Rods marking as well as the Measuring Ruler Scale.

The Crain One-Shot Direct Reading Rod Can Save Time and Reduces Errors

Often times I have customers calling and asking about a Lenker rod. Sometimes they refer to it as a linker rod, direct elevation rod, and even Lanker Rod. I always recommend Crain’s One Shot Direct Reading Rod. It has the same concept a Lenker rod but has a better design and a lower price. It has a strong durable construction without brittle tapes or easily breakable parts. Crain’s Direct Reading Rod It is ideal for Grading, Masonry, Site Work, Forms, Landscaping, Foundations, Sewers, Drainage and Slab Work.

Direct Elevation rods are specifically made for setting grade. It reduces errors by showing exactly how much needs to be cut or filled. To use a direct reading rod adjust the rod so the Zero point (or bench mark) is the same as the height of the instrument. Now when you move the rod around the work area it will indicate the amount that needs to be cu tor filled to set the grade. Cut numbers are marked in red and full numbers are black (along with arrows that indicate “cut” or “fill”.) The direct reading rod takes the math out of setting grade. Saving time and reducing errors.

Google SketchUp

Recently I came across Google SketchUp and was very please with the application. Not only is it free but it’s also easy to use. Google SketchUp is a good tool for Construction, Engineering, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning and home owners. Here’s some information I pulled off Google’s website.

SketchUp: pencil meets processor Let's face it: drawing on the computer hasn't exactly lived up to its hype. CAD may be good for drafting, but conceptual design is a whole different matter. SketchUp Pro is quick to learn and intuitive to use, meaning it stays out of the way of your creative process. You'll spend less time hunting for tools and reading manuals, and more time working

Construction companies and Engineering firms use SketchUp to quickly and effectively communicate 3D information, enhancing collaboration and ensuring a shared vision. Architects use SketchUp at every stage of the building design process. Architects tell us that SketchUp works the way they think, allowing them to go back and forth between pencil and computer to visualize complicated spatial relationships in 3D.

Google SketchUp has accurate measurements so your models have a precise dimension. You can build models that are as accurate as you need them. SketchUp's also lets you create, optimize and alter 3D terrain. You can generate a smooth landscape from a set of imported contour lines, add berms and valleys for runoff, and create a building pad and driveway.

For more information on Google SketchUp click here, http://sketchup.google.com/

Take a Look at the Safco Masterfile High-Density Storage Cabinet

The Safco Masterfile High-Density Blueprint Storage Cabinet is an awesome product. If you've never seen one, take a second to take a quick look. Its made to store and archive many documents (such as blueprints, maps, or drawings) in a small area of floor space. The Safco Masterfile basically works like this- you buy carrier strips that attach to the hanging edge of your document and the carrier strip has holes in it for the Masterfiles way of hanging and holding the documents. The Safco Masterfile has large bars (that look like spikes) that you slide the documents onto (actually the carrier strip is what slides onto the bars and the documents are attached to the carrier strips). Carrier strips come in a several different types of materials with some having a place to write your document identification on. The idea is to archive and protect documents that are valuable, valuable because of the amount of time invested in producing them, and also maybe they are originals with no other existing copies that need to be stored and protected. The Safco Company makes some very high-quality engineering-related products for the AEC world.

The uses for distance measuring wheels are endless

Don’t think you have to fall into a specialized career to have a need for a measuring wheel. The uses for distance measuring wheels are endless. There are multiple ways to use a measuring wheel around your house. I had a customer that wanted to measure the size of his yard because he wanted to do some landscape improvements such as fertilizer calculations, mulch beds as well as planning and installing a garden, a concrete driveway and a walkway. With his mid-sized measuring wheel he could take measurements himself with comfort and ease.

Thinking about installing new carpet, tile or hardwood floors? Small interior measuring wheels are perfect to taking room estimations. This way you know how much supplies you will need to get the job done, saving you time and money.

For more information view our full line of distance measuring wheels . If you have any questions about measuring wheel please email us and we will be more than happy to help you!

Keson Electronic Steel Measuring Wheel Model MP401E

Estimators have a very important job. Building Contractors use the work from building estimators to bid for a potential job opportunity. Without a good estimate, a bid could be too high and lose a potential project or bid too low and lose money after the work is completed.

Accurate measurements are crucial to Construction Estimators. They have the job of balancing company profit with the lowest bid. Not only do their measurements have to be accurate but the calculations they do with them must also be correct. Their different jobs can be so versatile that it’s hard to pin point exactly what features they’ll need. They prefer a sophisticated measuring wheel that is able to make their workload lighter.

The Keson 401E is ideal tool for construction estimators because it will perform advanced calculations. The Keson 401E electronic measuring can be used to automatically measure length and area. It also has an internal memory function to automatically add or subtract numbers. Moving the wheel forward adds to the measurement and moving the wheel backward subtracts.

The Keson 401E can measure and convert between feet and inches, feet and tenths, meters and continuous inches. It is durable and rugged, perfect for onsite use because of its water-resistant construction and the curved telescoping handle. The LCD counter features a 6 digit display with ½” high numbers. The auto shutdown mode and low battery detector ensure sufficient power to finish the job. Estimators use it for a variety of tasks including how much concrete, paint, pavement, and many other types of material are needed on a job site.

Measuring wheels can be used as a Runners Training Aid

Measuring wheels are also used by runners and track coaches. We have many customers that use the distance measuring wheels to measure the distance of a lap or course. It’s used by long distance runners, track and field, sprinters, marathon runners, track and cross country athletes. Any standard exterior measuring wheel will work for this application. There is not a specialized sporting good distance measuring wheel.

I had one customer that ordered a measuring wheel to make his son a track course. His son was on the high school track team and was hoping for a college scholarship. This meant he had to keep training even during the off season. The track at school was far away and he was getting a little bored running the same circle everyday. So His father purchased a measuring wheel to chart a route he could run in their neighborhood. This not only saved him gas money and driving time but he could get a new view while he exercised.

Paint Marking Measuring Wheels

Road and utilities crews have a unique situation when it comes to selecting a measuring wheel. Working near the road can be dangerous and minimal time should be spent on the road side near dangerous traffic conditions.

Most workers using a distance measuring wheel while marking locations with spray paint (aka "marking paint", or "upside down marking paint"). The user has the measuring wheel in one hand and the paint in the other. So in order to mark a specific point you either have to bend down and apply the paint or carry a separate bulky inverted spray wand. In both cases your hands are filled with no way to write down any notes, other than to lay one of the items in your hand down. And, your finger can get very tired spraying paint all day. Hence, paint marking measuring wheels like Keson’s RRPA182 is a great solution to these problems.

Keson’s Road Runner Paint Applicator Measuring Wheel has a 38 inch telescoping handle with a trigger that will spray the spray paint onto the ground. This improves accuracy and saves time, minimizing the time spent near dangerous areas. It is also light and portable weighing less than 2 pounds and collapsing down to 17 inches. The belt counter allows it to add when rolled forward and subtract when pulled in reverse. It measures 9,999 feet, 11 inches without resetting. Keson Road Runner RRPA182 Paint Applicator measuring wheel is ideal for Asphalt road crews and concrete contractors.

I bought a Mayline Ranger Drafting Table

Last month, I bought a Mayline Ranger Drafting Table for my personal use here in my office at EngineerSupply. Ordering online is somewhat addictive in that I placed the order, and in a few days a truck driver delivers the box to our office door. I opened the box and everything, all the parts were well packaged and protected, I was glad to see no damage had occurred during transit. I had always heard that they were easy to assemble but this was quick. The leg assemblies, left and right, were already together. I simple installed the stringer support (the part you put your feet on) and then the top two supports, then the top, along with the hinges and height adjusters. I think it took me about 20 minutes top to open the box, unwrap the parts, and get the desk together. It took only a wrench and a screwdriver and was totally painless. I imagined it would be lots of parts but it really wasnt. I was delighted when I found the leg assemblies already together, plenty of hardware, and easy-to-read instructions (I'll admit I didn't use the instructions at all). The table is extremely sturdy, and the board is nice and thick.

A Versatile Distance Measuring Wheel

We had another customer that was a contractor. He mentioned that he never really knew what type of job he was going to be on but he knew he needed a strong durable, versatile wheel that would be able to keep up with his line of work. Sometimes he’d have to measuring some pretty rough terrain so he had to be certain things couldn’t get caught in the spokes of his wheel.

We recommended to him the Keson Professional Measuring Wheel MP415 model. This Measuring Wheel has a Solid Wheel made of heavy ABS so spokes do not get caught in sticks or debris. Plus it has a two-scaled measuring wheel in Feet/Inches & Feet/Tenths. Simplicity and durability were two principles that guided Keson’s design of this Metal Measuring Wheel. The result is a wheel that rolls easily over the most difficult terrain and can stand up to constant heavy use. The Keson MP415 only two moving parts (reset and ticker) which means fewer things can go wrong. With its 5-digit counter it will count up to 99,999 feet. It also comes with a 6-Year Manufacturers Warranty.

The DuraWheel DW-500 Measuring Wheel

We have a lot of customers who are Realtors and estimators that order distance measuring wheels. One of their favorites is the Dura Wheel DW-500 Measuring Wheel. This is a great tool to measure the size of a room with, especially when you need to take the measurement by yourself. Another great benefit of the DW-500 is that it is belt driven. This means if you accidentally roll the measuring wheel too far moving the wheel backwards and will subtract the amount you’ve traveled. The DuraWheel DW-500 also features a 5-Digit Counter that measures in feet and tenths. The Extended Length is 38 inches and it folds down to a small compact size of only 14 inches. Another useful measuring tool from EngineerSupply.

Distance Measuring Wheels

For the next couple weeks we’re going to be focusing on one of our most popular tools, the Distance Measuring Wheel. The popularity of this distance measuring tool is simple. Many people in many different industries are looking for a practical, quick and easy way to measure distances. Taking measurements with a measuring wheel is as simple as taking a walk. Simply roll the measuring wheel along the area you need to measure and it will automatically track the distance you’ve traveled. Below are some tips to help ensure you’re picking the best measuring wheel for you needs.

Small wheels are intended to be used on hard smooth surfaces, typically found indoors. Small Wheels are ideal for Painters, Interior Designers, Appraisers, Realtors, and Carpet Layers.

Medium to large wheels are recommended for taking exterior distance measurements, like measuring a field or lawn. The smallest diameter recommended for exterior measurements is 10 inches. Rougher conditions require a larger wheel in order to improve accuracy. Medium to large wheels are ideal for exterior use including Fencing, Contractors (including paving, concrete, cement and road contractors), Landscapers, City Maintenance, Insurance Adjusters, and Appraisers.

You can buy mechanical or electronic (digital) distance measuring wheels depending on your needs. Theres advantaged and disadvantages to either mechanical or electronic. A disadvantage of electronic wheels is that you have to always have fresh batteries with you in the field, but they give you the ability to measure in different units of measurement with the click of a button. With mechanical wheels, you dont have to have fresh batteries since they dont require batteries at all, and they are very easy to use.

In my next few posts I will discuss some different uses for measuring wheels and ways our customers have used measuring wheels to make work easier.

Engineering Jokes Anyone?

The folks over at Boss International seem to have a good sense of humor with their blog that includes some Engineering Jokes. One of my previous supervisors and mentors when I was a GIS Manager told me to "never lose my sense of humor, if you do, the game is over". I considered it to be very good advice from a man that lived to retire and grow old while keeping things in perspective. In today's business and economic environment, this statement is probably more true than ever.

Easily Calculate Distance with Stadia

Stadiametric rangefinding, or the stadia method, is used to quickly measure distances with an engineer's transit, theodolites, or auto-level and a graduated rod (Please note that most Total Stations do not have stadia markings). The instrument must be used on a level surface for this method to work correctly. This Stadia range finding is good for locating topographic details such as fields, rivers, bridges, buildings, and roads.

An instrument equipped for stadia work has two horizontal stadia marks spaced an equal distance from the center crosshair of the reticle. The distance between the stadia markings usually have a stadia interval factor of 100. This is important to know when calculating the distance between the instrument and the stadia rod.

To estimate distance with the stadia measuring method, hold the stadia rod so that it can be seen between the two stadia marks on the instrument's reticle (as pictured). With the Stadia Surveying Instrument focused on the rod, read the measurement markings on the stadia rod shown between the two stadia markings. The formula to calculate distance is D=R*S (Distance = Rod Reading Multiplied by the Stadia Constant.) The stadia constant is indicated on your instrument’s Users Manual. Most surveying Instruments have a Stadia constant of “100”. Therefore, if 6 feet is indicated on the rod, then the distance from the telescope to the rod is 600 ft. The calculation would look like this 100 * 6 ft = 600 ft. Stadia can give results accurate to about 1 foot under ideal conditions.

The stadia method of distance measurement is primarily used by professionals for a quick rough estimate and by those who primary task is not surveying. If you have any more questions about surveying instruments or would to purchase a tool to help you calculate stadia please visit EngineerSupply.com

Improve Your Productivity with Dual Monitors

According to a study done by the University of Utah and ATI Technologies “multi-screen users get on task quicker, work faster and get more work done with fewer errors” said Dr. James Anderson, professor at the University of Utah. He even speculated that “…Multiple monitor configurations are poised to become the new standard in the workplace.”

Here’s some more information the study uncovered:
33% fewer errors
18% faster in error-less editing of multiple tasks
16% faster edits throughout the task
10% more error-less edits generated
6% quicker access to tasks (opening, sizing, aligning windows)
45% easier task tracking (finding windows, referencing text, etc.)
38% easier to move sources of information around
32% faster to perform tasks
29% more effective for tasks
24% more comfortable to use in tasks
19% easier to recover from mistakes
17% easier to learn how to accomplish the task

Making the change to multiple monitors is fairly easy. The main concern most people have is the amount of desk space 2 monitors require. ESI’s multi-monitor arm not only solves this problem but has numerous other benefits as well. First, it maximizes available space. It lifts the monitors off of the desk surface giving you more working space. Second, these mounts are adjustable so you can set the monitor to your specific needs. A well placed monitor can help alleviate neck, back and shoulder pain. And finally it’s good for the environment. They are made from a minimum of 99% post consumer recycled product (and is also recyclable.)

The ESI Dual-Monitor Multi-Mount Articulating Arms are very sturdy and can accommodate 1 to 6 monitors. For more information on this product and ESI’s fully line of ergonomical solutions visit EngineerSupply.com

Topo Maps in Google Earth?

It's true that Google Earth already contains high-resolution satellite data for many cities and even some non-urban areas. But, Google Earth doesn't have Topographic Overlays just yet. Don't worry! Topo Overlays in Google Earth are possible by using what are called "KML Overlays". What is a KML you ask? Read more about what KML files are on Google. Once you have an understanding of what a KML file is, try reading and downloading some free KML overlay files. One reference is The Map Room blog, and also the Google Earth Blog.

Once you have a KML file ready for use, launch Google Earth and "open" the KML file and it's fairly easy to get Topo overlay data. This works great for soil survey professionals, land surveyors, bankers, appraisers, or basically anyone that shops with us here at EngineerSupply.com that is wanting a quick USGS Topo Map type of topo to overlay on a Google Earth Map. Within minutes you should be viewing Topo Maps in Google Earth!

Rotary Laser Levels and Slope

When purchasing a Rotary Laser Level. One of the first questions you need to ask yourself is “Do I need a laser to do slope?” And if so, “Do I need it to do single slope or dual slope?”

First, Rotary Laser Levels have two different options for leveling the instrument before doing any work and they are: Manual or Automatic. Manual leveling is set by the operator with the help of bubble vials. Automatic leveling is preformed automatically by the laser unit itself. Most self-leveling lasers have a “self-leveling range” this is the range it can be out of level and still automatically adjust to level.

There are three different types of level that a laser level can do, level, single slope and dual slope. Level is pretty self-explanatory. Level can be used to put in anything like a drop ceiling, chair rail or concrete slab foundation. Single slope has one grade. Single slope is used for setting grade on things like stairs, landscapes, sidewalks and driveways. Dual slope is a little more complicated. Picture a drive way. Driveways are typically angled to allow water to run off the side. This prevents water from collecting on the driving surface. Now imagine that driveway is going down hill. So you have an angled drive way that is running down hill, that is “dual slope.” We have many different lasers, each can handle different slopes and specific criteria that customer’s need. Please feel free to browse our online selection and please contact EngineerSupply if you need any help selecting the best laser level to meet your needs.

Blueprint Storage Tube Boxes

The Manager 37 and Manager 25 are some of the best storage boxes we've seen for blueprint storage. The Manager 37, it's 37 inches deep which works great for drawings that are rolled up and are 36" long. This leaves one inch of extra space which is nice so you don't find yourself trying to push the top down and crinkle the ends of your rolled drawings. The Manager 25 is built the same way but is 25 inches deep, which works well with 24" long rolled drawings. Both the MGR37 and MGR25 both have a printed index grid on the lid so that you can write down which drawings are in which tubes, which saves time when looking for a stored drawing. All Managers are built using thick sturdy corrugated material (if you ever pick up a box and think "boy this sure is a heavy duty box", then this is what the Managers feel like). The interior partitions are removable so you can configure them any way you want to so that you can make the holes larger if you have rolls that are larger in diameter. AOS took customers feedback and then went onto start making two new products, the Manager 37-9 and Manager 25-9, both of which have 9 tubes which are larger (less tubes means larger holes). One more feature of the Manager is they can be easily stacked in a file storage closet or room.

Another GPS Idea for Saving Fuel

I know this is probably a far-fetched idea, but it's something I thought of that would also save fuel using GPS technology. If our automobiles had a way to send our vehicles location information while we're driving up to a system that records x, y, and z coordinates, it would only take a few weeks for our driving efforts to automatically and fully map the entire highway network in the USA. After the recording and mapping of all traveled highways x, y, and z coordinates (remember the z coordinate is the elevation), that information could then be used to help control our automobiles engines behavior. With a mapped system of coordinates and locations, the GPS system would be intelligent enough for our automobiles to "know" if a hill or stop was coming and allow for reduced number of cylinders and/or a rev limit on the engine that would help reduce speeds in anticipation of a stop or of a hill to climb. The system would help aid the automobile in saving fuel as well as avoiding accidents. Just think, your car would stop accelerating as you come to a stop light (you would still have control but your car would not allow you to accelerate towards a stop light. And, your car would start to decelerate longer than what most humans do as they wait to the last second to touch the brakes for a stop light). Increased safety and fuel savings, why not?

Saving Fuel using GPS-Controlled In-Car Stoplights

I have had an green idea that I think is maybe worth sharing with the world. With all the electricity our country wastes with stop lights at nearly every intersection, I had an idea of having GPS-controlled miniature stop lights that are on our automobiles dashboards. This would reduce the need for stoplights and the electricity they waste. Every car on the highway would have a miniature stop light on the dashboard. This miniature stop light would also have sound, voice or sound alerts such as "you're approaching an intersection, start slowing down now". Or, "The approaching stop light is now yellow". The in-car stop light would be controlled by GPS and mimic what our existing stop lights are now doing. Our highways would of course need to be mapped so the GPS maps would know where intersections exist. There's multiple benefits to this idea and a few kinks that would need to be worked out. Lights and sound would hopefully make more people alert and reduce accidents. Stop lights and the electricity needed to power them would no longer be necessary. Our automobiles electrical system would power the GPS stop light using DC current. The sensors that now sense our automobiles in an intersection would still be used, but maybe one day GPS units would also transmit our location to the traffic control system and software would control our in-car stoplights to help avoid any wasted fuel (how many times have you sat at a stop light and nobody was around!) with a more efficient means to control the flow of traffic using stop lights.

ESI Single-Mount Monitor Arm

The ESI Single-Mount Monitor arm is one of the best products I've ever purchased for myself. I bought one back a few months ago and most of my neck pain disappeared, along with a less cluttered desk space. Visually for me, less cluttered means a better workspace that helps my working environment, which in turn makes me more productive. The ESI Single-Mount Monitor arm is well-built, sturdy, and heavy. The brackets, hardware, post, and arm all surprised me when I removed it from the shipping carton. With the weight of this product, I immediately knew it would hold my 22" widescreen LCD monitor and at any angle, height, or distance from my eyes that I wanted. I knew it was going to help me before I even assembled it and mounted my monitor to it.

Buy Keson, Buy American

Many Americans these days are looking reliable, economical products. Keson makes high-quality measuring and marking products such as measuring wheels, measuring tapes (both large and pocket tapes), tally meters, marking flags, and marking chalk. Keson products are designed for professional-grade everyday use and occasional abuse (accidental of course) for professionals. Keson is an American manufacturer and has been known for quality products for over 40 years. Keson quotes one of their customer’s that says it this way, “Keson is big enough to provide a wide variety of high-quality products, yet small enough to care.” When you purchase Keson tools you’ll see the care and thought they put into each of their products. If you’re looking for a high-quality measuring tool from an American manufacturer, choose Keson.

Schonstedt MAC-51Bx “The All Purpose Locator”

I have customers ask me how to locate utilities underground. The first thing I ask is, “what exactly do you want to locate?” This is the most important question when you are purchasing an underground locator. There are two tools for locating items underground a Magnetic Locator and a “Pipe and Cable Locator.” Each locating system will locate different objects underground. The Magnetic Locator will detect ferrous objects, like those made from lead and steel. In other words it will detect anything that a magnet will stick to. Pipe and cable locators detect signals. They can be used to detect power lines, cable lines, telephone lines and plastic pipes (with the use of a sonde.) Schonstedt has a special tool for customers who need both a Magnetic Locator and a Pipe and Cable Locator. The MAC-51Bx is the most cost-effective, all-purpose locating system on the market. It consists of a Transmitter, Pipe and Cable Locator and a Magnetic Locator all in one unit.

Pipe and Cable Locators will ONLY locate objects that have some type of "charge" or "signal" placed on them. Many utilities already have a signal of their own that can sometimes be detected, such as live for power lines. The Mac comes with a transmitter built directly into the hard case. This is used to induce a charge on utilities. It is capable of locating on two different frequencies: 571Hz and 82.5 kHz. Different frequencies work better on different objects and soil types.

To use it as a Magnetic Locator just set the Mode switch to MAG, the Gain control to mid-range, and you're ready to locate underground ferrous pipes, water meters, water valves, and property markers - or anything that has a magnetic field including the 50/60Hz electro-magnetic field generated by energized power lines.

The MAC-51Bx is the most cost-effective, all-purpose locating system on the market. It comes with a Three Year Manufacturer’s Warranty. It comes standard with a Hard Case designed with a built in Transmitter, Receiver (the wand), Instructional Video, Users Manual, Conductive Cable and Clips Assembly (8 Ft long cable with two clips: 1 large, 1 small) and Batteries.

Use a Pipe and Cable Locator to locate the following items underground
electrical power cable made of aluminum or copper, cable TV lines, fiber optic lines with a metallic conductor along side, irrigation lines, plastic pipe or conduit (plastic pipe can be located by inserting a sonde or mini-transmitter and locating the sonde), plastic pipe tracer wire, power lines, streetlight power, and water lines.

Use a Magnetic Locator to locate the following items underground
Anything Ferrous including cast iron pipes, property corner markers, steel enclosures or hardware, hazmat drums, mag & pk nails, manhole and handhole covers, marker magnets, septic tanks, unexploded ordnances, curb & valve boxes, weapons, and well casings. Basically speaking anything a magnet will stick to, a Magnetic Locator will detect.

Don’t throw it away, Fix it instead

EngineerSupply knows its customers are looking for more ways to save money. But accidents still happen. I’ve had multiple customers call me looking for Replacement Parts to fix broken equipment. One customer lost the hard case for his laser when it fell out of the bed of his truck while traveling to a job site. Another customers tripod fell over and damaged the leg clamp and the surveying instrument was unharmed. EngineerSupply has replacement parts for many of the products we represent. You can save money and decrease down-time by purchasing replacement parts and fixing equipment yourself. (I would not recommend repairing tools like lasers and optical instruments - please leave this to the trained technicians.) Most tools like tripods and rods can be fixed by replacing a part. Accessories like cases and glasses can be easily replaced. We carry replacement parts for Safco and Mayline hanging clamp file systems like wing knobs, springs and T-bolts. Browse our website to see our selection of replacement parts. If we do not have the part you need on our website, chances are we can still get them for you direct from the manufacturer so please ask if you don't see it.

Keson Calibrated Measuring Tapes

I have had many customers ask about the calibration for measuring tapes. Calibration refers to the accuracy of the markings on the measuring tool. Keson's Perma-Clad steel tapes meet the standards of the United States Department of Weights and Measures. Keson offers a Report of Calibration for their Perma-Clad steel measuring tapes. This report is available from EngineerSupply free of charge to any customer that needs the calibration report. If you are interested in hearing more about Keson tapes and all of our measuring tapes please visit our website or contact us directly.

Safco Brand Aluminum Hanging Drawing Clamps

If you're looking for Blueprint Storage, or are wanting to organize your blueprints or drawings, try using Safco Planhold Brand Aluminum Hanging Drawing Clamps. They are sold in various sizes (lengths). The most popular size (length) is the 30" Clamps. The reason is because most engineering or construction drawings are prepared on 24"x36" or 30"x42" media. With a 30" clamp, you can clamp either size of drawing without any problems. The 24" side of a 24"x36" drawing will be held by the clamp and you will have some overhang but only 3" on each end of the clamp, which is not a bad thing. Safco Drawing Clamps, or Mayline Brand Drawing Clamps are interchangeable on most Blueprint Drawing Racks. Remember, the 30" drawing clamps are the most popular.

Best Bang for the Buck Rotary Laser Level

The best bang for the buck Rotary Laser Level in our opinion is the Pacific Laser Systems Rotary PLSHVR-505R Kit. It comes with everything you'd need to work indoors and outdoors, including a Laser Detector, Tripod, and Grade Rod. PLS manufacturers a really nice sturdy grade of product. The lasers case is not cheap feeling, and it feels good in your hand. The units just work when you turn them on, without fail from what we've seen. The 505R is a new model that PLS started making a few months ago and the demand for it has been high. They used to make a model 500 that also fit the bill for quality to price ratio, but now with their new 505 model (the "R" stands for Red since it has a red laser beam) they have improved features and reliability.

Most people don't complain, they just move on

I sometimes think some retailers, or any business for that matter, has the thought of if you don't hear them complain, then we must be doing something right....WRONG! The fact is, most people don't complain, they just move on. This has been a firm belief of mine since I started EngineerSupply back in 1999. Knowing this has always helped me grow EngineerSupply into what it is today. We don't give our customers reason to complain. The moment we receive a phone call from a customer, or an order, we start to working for them (actually we have usually been working for the customer before the moment we get the order, as we're always building quotes, answering questions about products, and educating customers on how our products work, many times long before the customer places their order). We have systems in place to track their order from start to finish, finish being the customer received the product delivered on time and at the correct location, and undamaged. Sounds simple, but it's not. It can be a challenge moving products like Blueprint Storage, Surveying Equipment and Supplies, Drafting Tools and Equipment from point A to point B, tracking it from hub to terminal, then watching each orders' tracking number to make sure it was signed for and delivered to the correct location and on time. Theres many other facets of customer service but this one stands out in my mind as what people are wanting. We always remember that if a customer doesn't complain then it doesn't necessarily mean that they're happy.

Blueline Machines are Reliable and Economical

Blueprint Machines are reliable and offer crisp prints at an economical price. Blueline machines are used to make a print from an original document made from vellum (sometimes known a "trans-bond") or any material that allows light to pass through. Diazo copiers use Diazo-coated papers, vellums, and films, which are readily available and reasonably priced at EngineerSupply. The ammonia, used by most Diazo copier systems, is low in cost and environmentally safe. Diazit Blueprint Copiers have an inherently simple design with relatively few complicated parts. Because of this they require little maintenance. They are very reliable pieces of equipment that provide years of useful life with little down time. Most Diazo blue line machines remain in use for well over 20 years with a high degree of reliability and little down time. EngineerSuppply has all machines in stock now and can ship out within 48 hours. There has never been a better time to buy a Diazit Blueprint Copier.

Reflective Safety Vests

About a week ago, I took some sample products home to test and use to see how they worked (or not). One of the sample products I had brought home was a Reflective Surveying Safety Vest by Seco (Seco brand products are usually awesome and quality made). I was going to walk our dog early this morning and decided to slip the safety vest on and see how well the reflective material would work. I was surprised at what I found happen. It was very early this morning before the sun had come up and people leaving their homes headed for work were driving down our street. To my amazement, they would slow way down, much slower than I've ever seen traffic on our street. Usually they fly by without much regard to anyone walking and seem to forget about the pedestrian has the right-of-way idea. With the reflective safety vest on, they began slowing down far in advance, which made it a very nice walk. I felt much safer with their slower speeds, but also realized that a new safety vest, one that is to the latest safety requirements, really made the difference in my dog and I being safe while walking. The vest worked so well I am now considering walking our dog before the sun comes up just so I can benefit from traffic using their headlights. It was safer walking in the dark than it was in the day time, due to the reflective strips on the safety vest! I would recommend that Land Surveying Company owners invest in safety vests for their surveying crews that meet newer safety requirements. Investing in your employees safety is not only important, but it helps protect your business from losing an employee and hopefully against law suits.

Virginia Begins Licensure Program for Surveyor Photogrammetrists

Virginia Begins Licensure Program for Surveyor Photogrammetrists
Limited-time “grandfathering” period for current practitioners

EngineerSupply wants to ensure it customer’s are up to date on important legislation regarding their profession, because of that dedication we would like to share the following announcement from the Department of Professional & Occupational Regulation (www.dpor.virginia.gov/dporweb)

Virginia law now requires individuals who practice land surveying using photogrammetry or other remote-sensing technology to hold a state license.

The legislature established the Surveyor Photogrammetrist licensure requirement during the 2005 General Assembly Session. The Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects (APELSCIDLA Board) developed regulations effective December 1, 2008, to administer the licensure program.

The new state regulations provide for a 12-month license examination waiver for surveyor photogrammetrists. The waiver allows existing photogrammetrists – individuals who practice land surveying using photogrammetry or other remote-sending technology – to be “grandfathered” into the licensure program.

Applicants under the “grandfather” provision may qualify for licensure based on documented education and experience in the field. Licenses will be issued to qualified individuals who apply between December 1, 2008 and November 30, 2009. After the 12-month grandfathering period expires, applicants must meet additional requirements including examinations.

Applications for the Surveyor Photogrammetrist license are available online at www.dpor.virginia.gov or by contacting the APELSCIDLA Board office at (804) 367-8512.

Current practitioners may waive the examination requirement by submitting an application for a grandfather license no later than November 30, 2009. As of December 1, 2009, all surveyor photogrammetrist license applicants must qualify for and pass examination in order to obtain a license.

Phil Says "Six More Weeks of Winter!" so make the most out of winter

Every February 2nd, Americans celebrate one of the most unique holidays I can think of, Groundhog Day. I’m not sure how familiar you are with ground hog’s day but crowds start to gather at 3 am, and wait anxiously for the groundhog predict when spring will come. Most of the groundhogs this year have already made their prediction, and the consensus is six more weeks of winter.

I know winter can be a hard time for the surveying and construction industries, especially with the current economic troubles plaguing our nation. Many are looking forward to spring and the promise it holds for increased work opportunities. Instead of thinking of winter as a disadvantage, think of it as an opportunity. Winter can be a great time to prepare for summer. With spring just around the corner here’s a few steps you can do now to make sure you’re ready…

Read up- start with some trade magazines, industry blogs (like engineersupply.blogspot.com), catch up on new industry developments, and consider taking some continuing education classes. Many surveying associations offer classes that cover everything from surveying classes about new industry developments, legal concerns, and techniques to business classes to help surveyors with their own business.

Make sure all you equipment is in good condition. Make any needed repairs or replacements. EngineerSupply.com carries a wide variety of equipment at great prices. We are to help you get the products you need, with great prices and excellent service! In January of this year new regulations made for surveying safety vests (check out our blog for more information.) Check your safety vests to make sure they are in compliance. Remember that faded vests might not be compliant with the new safety regulations.

Consider alternate sources for business. Check with local government agencies to see if they have any outstanding bids and consider submitting a quote. Make new business connections. Consider social media sites like “Facebook.com”, “Twitter.com” and “Linkedin.com.” This can be a great resource for tapping into social business networks. (EngineerSupply.com can be found on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.)

Set goals with your employees; make it a vision for the company. Choose something attainable and work together. This is great for team building and morale. Consider making minor changes to your business to make it more cost efficient. Here at EngineerSupply we are always conscious of conserving. Not only to decrease business expenses but to conserve natural resources. Take small steps like shutting off the light whenever you leave or reusing old paper as scrap paper (just make sure it doesn’t have any sensitive information on it!)

As I’ve said in previous posts, Surveying Associations are a great resource for surveyors! The winter months are a great time to get involved. Many offer great services like continuing education, trade shows and business directories and that’s just some of the unique services that they offer.

These are just some of the steps you can take now to help your business flourish this year. Remember that spring will be coming soon so take advantage of these winter months to help you make the most of it.
