Keson Electronic Steel Measuring Wheel Model MP401E
Estimators have a very important job. Building Contractors use the work from building estimators to bid for a potential job opportunity. Without a good estimate, a bid could be too high and lose a potential project or bid too low and lose money after the work is completed.
Accurate measurements are crucial to Construction Estimators. They have the job of balancing company profit with the lowest bid. Not only do their measurements have to be accurate but the calculations they do with them must also be correct. Their different jobs can be so versatile that it’s hard to pin point exactly what features they’ll need. They prefer a sophisticated measuring wheel that is able to make their workload lighter.
The Keson 401E is ideal tool for construction estimators because it will perform advanced calculations. The Keson 401E electronic measuring can be used to automatically measure length and area. It also has an internal memory function to automatically add or subtract numbers. Moving the wheel forward adds to the measurement and moving the wheel backward subtracts.
The Keson 401E can measure and convert between feet and inches, feet and tenths, meters and continuous inches. It is durable and rugged, perfect for onsite use because of its water-resistant construction and the curved telescoping handle. The LCD counter features a 6 digit display with ½” high numbers. The auto shutdown mode and low battery detector ensure sufficient power to finish the job. Estimators use it for a variety of tasks including how much concrete, paint, pavement, and many other types of material are needed on a job site.

Measuring wheels can be used as a Runners Training Aid
I had one customer that ordered a measuring wheel to make his son a track course. His son was on the high school track team and was hoping for a college scholarship. This meant he had to keep training even during the off season. The track at school was far away and he was getting a little bored running the same circle everyday. So His father purchased a measuring wheel to chart a route he could run in their neighborhood. This not only saved him gas money and driving time but he could get a new view while he exercised.

Paint Marking Measuring Wheels
Most workers using a distance measuring wheel while marking locations with spray paint (aka "marking paint", or "upside down marking paint"). The user has the measuring wheel in one hand and the paint in the other. So in order to mark a specific point you either have to bend down and apply the paint or carry a separate bulky inverted spray wand. In both cases your hands are filled with no way to write down any notes, other than to lay one of the items in your hand down. And, your finger can get very tired spraying paint all day. Hence, paint marking measuring wheels like Keson’s RRPA182 is a great solution to these problems.
Keson’s Road Runner Paint Applicator Measuring Wheel has a 38 inch telescoping handle with a trigger that will spray the spray paint onto the ground. This improves accuracy and saves time, minimizing the time spent near dangerous areas. It is also light and portable weighing less than 2 pounds and collapsing down to 17 inches. The belt counter allows it to add when rolled forward and subtract when pulled in reverse. It measures 9,999 feet, 11 inches without resetting. Keson Road Runner RRPA182 Paint Applicator measuring wheel is ideal for Asphalt road crews and concrete contractors.

Distance Measuring Wheels
Small wheels are intended to be used on hard smooth surfaces, typically found indoors. Small Wheels are ideal for Painters, Interior Designers, Appraisers, Realtors, and Carpet Layers.
Medium to large wheels are recommended for taking exterior distance measurements, like measuring a field or lawn. The smallest diameter recommended for exterior measurements is 10 inches. Rougher conditions require a larger wheel in order to improve accuracy. Medium to large wheels are ideal for exterior use including Fencing, Contractors (including paving, concrete, cement and road contractors), Landscapers, City Maintenance, Insurance Adjusters, and Appraisers.
You can buy mechanical or electronic (digital) distance measuring wheels depending on your needs. Theres advantaged and disadvantages to either mechanical or electronic. A disadvantage of electronic wheels is that you have to always have fresh batteries with you in the field, but they give you the ability to measure in different units of measurement with the click of a button. With mechanical wheels, you dont have to have fresh batteries since they dont require batteries at all, and they are very easy to use.
In my next few posts I will discuss some different uses for measuring wheels and ways our customers have used measuring wheels to make work easier.

Easily Calculate Distance with Stadia

An instrument equipped for stadia work has two horizontal stadia marks spaced an equal distance from the center crosshair of the reticle. The distance between the stadia markings usually have a stadia interval factor of 100. This is important to know when calculating the distance between the instrument and the stadia rod.
To estimate distance with the stadia measuring method, hold the stadia rod so that it can be seen between the two stadia marks on the instrument's reticle (as pictured). With the Stadia Surveying Instrument focused on the rod, read the measurement markings on the stadia rod shown between the two stadia markings. The formula to calculate distance is D=R*S (Distance = Rod Reading Multiplied by the Stadia Constant.) The stadia constant is indicated on your instrument’s Users Manual. Most surveying Instruments have a Stadia constant of “100”. Therefore, if 6 feet is indicated on the rod, then the distance from the telescope to the rod is 600 ft. The calculation would look like this 100 * 6 ft = 600 ft. Stadia can give results accurate to about 1 foot under ideal conditions.
The stadia method of distance measurement is primarily used by professionals for a quick rough estimate and by those who primary task is not surveying. If you have any more questions about surveying instruments or would to purchase a tool to help you calculate stadia please visit EngineerSupply.com

Topo Maps in Google Earth?
Once you have a KML file ready for use, launch Google Earth and "open" the KML file and it's fairly easy to get Topo overlay data. This works great for soil survey professionals, land surveyors, bankers, appraisers, or basically anyone that shops with us here at EngineerSupply.com that is wanting a quick USGS Topo Map type of topo to overlay on a Google Earth Map. Within minutes you should be viewing Topo Maps in Google Earth!
Rotary Laser Levels and Slope

First, Rotary Laser Levels have two different options for leveling the instrument before doing any work and they are: Manual or Automatic. Manual leveling is set by the operator with the help of bubble vials. Automatic leveling is preformed automatically by the laser unit itself. Most self-leveling lasers have a “self-leveling range” this is the range it can be out of level and still automatically adjust to level.
There are three different types of level that a laser level can do, level, single slope and dual slope. Level is pretty self-explanatory. Level can be used to put in anything like a drop ceiling, chair rail or concrete slab foundation. Single slope has one grade. Single slope is used for setting grade on things like stairs, landscapes, sidewalks and driveways. Dual slope is a little more complicated. Picture a drive way. Driveways are typically angled to allow water to run off the side. This prevents water from collecting on the driving surface. Now imagine that driveway is going down hill. So you have an angled drive way that is running down hill, that is “dual slope.” We have many different lasers, each can handle different slopes and specific criteria that customer’s need. Please feel free to browse our online selection and please contact EngineerSupply if you need any help selecting the best laser level to meet your needs.

Blueprint Storage Tube Boxes

The Manager 37 and Manager 25 are some of the best storage boxes we've seen for blueprint storage. The Manager 37, it's 37 inches deep which works great for drawings that are rolled up and are 36" long. This leaves one inch of extra space which is nice so you don't find yourself trying to push the top down and crinkle the ends of your rolled drawings. The Manager 25 is built the same way but is 25 inches deep, which works well with 24" long rolled drawings. Both the MGR37 and MGR25 both have a printed index grid on the lid so that you can write down which drawings are in which tubes, which saves time when looking for a stored drawing. All Managers are built using thick sturdy corrugated material (if you ever pick up a box and think "boy this sure is a heavy duty box", then this is what the Managers feel like). The interior partitions are removable so you can configure them any way you want to so that you can make the holes larger if you have rolls that are larger in diameter. AOS took customers feedback and then went onto start making two new products, the Manager 37-9 and Manager 25-9, both of which have 9 tubes which are larger (less tubes means larger holes). One more feature of the Manager is they can be easily stacked in a file storage closet or room.

ESI Single-Mount Monitor Arm

The ESI Single-Mount Monitor arm is one of the best products I've ever purchased for myself. I bought one back a few months ago and most of my neck pain disappeared, along with a less cluttered desk space. Visually for me, less cluttered means a better workspace that helps my working environment, which in turn makes me more productive. The ESI Single-Mount Monitor arm is well-built, sturdy, and heavy. The brackets, hardware, post, and arm all surprised me when I removed it from the shipping carton. With the weight of this product, I immediately knew it would hold my 22" widescreen LCD monitor and at any angle, height, or distance from my eyes that I wanted. I knew it was going to help me before I even assembled it and mounted my monitor to it.

Schonstedt MAC-51Bx “The All Purpose Locator”

Pipe and Cable Locators will ONLY locate objects that have some type of "charge" or "signal" placed on them. Many utilities already have a signal of their own that can sometimes be detected, such as live for power lines. The Mac comes with a transmitter built directly into the hard case. This is used to induce a charge on utilities. It is capable of locating on two different frequencies: 571Hz and 82.5 kHz. Different frequencies work better on different objects and soil types.
To use it as a Magnetic Locator just set the Mode switch to MAG, the Gain control to mid-range, and you're ready to locate underground ferrous pipes, water meters, water valves, and property markers - or anything that has a magnetic field including the 50/60Hz electro-magnetic field generated by energized power lines.
The MAC-51Bx is the most cost-effective, all-purpose locating system on the market. It comes with a Three Year Manufacturer’s Warranty. It comes standard with a Hard Case designed with a built in Transmitter, Receiver (the wand), Instructional Video, Users Manual, Conductive Cable and Clips Assembly (8 Ft long cable with two clips: 1 large, 1 small) and Batteries.
Use a Pipe and Cable Locator to locate the following items underground
electrical power cable made of aluminum or copper, cable TV lines, fiber optic lines with a metallic conductor along side, irrigation lines, plastic pipe or conduit (plastic pipe can be located by inserting a sonde or mini-transmitter and locating the sonde), plastic pipe tracer wire, power lines, streetlight power, and water lines.
Use a Magnetic Locator to locate the following items underground
Anything Ferrous including cast iron pipes, property corner markers, steel enclosures or hardware, hazmat drums, mag & pk nails, manhole and handhole covers, marker magnets, septic tanks, unexploded ordnances, curb & valve boxes, weapons, and well casings. Basically speaking anything a magnet will stick to, a Magnetic Locator will detect.

Best Bang for the Buck Rotary Laser Level

The best bang for the buck Rotary Laser Level in our opinion is the Pacific Laser Systems Rotary PLSHVR-505R Kit. It comes with everything you'd need to work indoors and outdoors, including a Laser Detector, Tripod, and Grade Rod. PLS manufacturers a really nice sturdy grade of product. The lasers case is not cheap feeling, and it feels good in your hand. The units just work when you turn them on, without fail from what we've seen. The 505R is a new model that PLS started making a few months ago and the demand for it has been high. They used to make a model 500 that also fit the bill for quality to price ratio, but now with their new 505 model (the "R" stands for Red since it has a red laser beam) they have improved features and reliability.

Virginia Begins Licensure Program for Surveyor Photogrammetrists
Limited-time “grandfathering” period for current practitioners
EngineerSupply wants to ensure it customer’s are up to date on important legislation regarding their profession, because of that dedication we would like to share the following announcement from the Department of Professional & Occupational Regulation (www.dpor.virginia.gov/dporweb)
Virginia law now requires individuals who practice land surveying using photogrammetry or other remote-sensing technology to hold a state license.
The legislature established the Surveyor Photogrammetrist licensure requirement during the 2005 General Assembly Session. The Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects (APELSCIDLA Board) developed regulations effective December 1, 2008, to administer the licensure program.
The new state regulations provide for a 12-month license examination waiver for surveyor photogrammetrists. The waiver allows existing photogrammetrists – individuals who practice land surveying using photogrammetry or other remote-sending technology – to be “grandfathered” into the licensure program.
Applicants under the “grandfather” provision may qualify for licensure based on documented education and experience in the field. Licenses will be issued to qualified individuals who apply between December 1, 2008 and November 30, 2009. After the 12-month grandfathering period expires, applicants must meet additional requirements including examinations.
Applications for the Surveyor Photogrammetrist license are available online at www.dpor.virginia.gov or by contacting the APELSCIDLA Board office at (804) 367-8512.
Current practitioners may waive the examination requirement by submitting an application for a grandfather license no later than November 30, 2009. As of December 1, 2009, all surveyor photogrammetrist license applicants must qualify for and pass examination in order to obtain a license.

Phil Says "Six More Weeks of Winter!" so make the most out of winter
I know winter can be a hard time for the surveying and construction industries, especially with the current economic troubles plaguing our nation. Many are looking forward to spring and the promise it holds for increased work opportunities. Instead of thinking of winter as a disadvantage, think of it as an opportunity. Winter can be a great time to prepare for summer. With spring just around the corner here’s a few steps you can do now to make sure you’re ready…
Read up- start with some trade magazines, industry blogs (like engineersupply.blogspot.com), catch up on new industry developments, and consider taking some continuing education classes. Many surveying associations offer classes that cover everything from surveying classes about new industry developments, legal concerns, and techniques to business classes to help surveyors with their own business.
Make sure all you equipment is in good condition. Make any needed repairs or replacements. EngineerSupply.com carries a wide variety of equipment at great prices. We are to help you get the products you need, with great prices and excellent service! In January of this year new regulations made for surveying safety vests (check out our blog for more information.) Check your safety vests to make sure they are in compliance. Remember that faded vests might not be compliant with the new safety regulations.
Consider alternate sources for business. Check with local government agencies to see if they have any outstanding bids and consider submitting a quote. Make new business connections. Consider social media sites like “Facebook.com”, “Twitter.com” and “Linkedin.com.” This can be a great resource for tapping into social business networks. (EngineerSupply.com can be found on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.)
Set goals with your employees; make it a vision for the company. Choose something attainable and work together. This is great for team building and morale. Consider making minor changes to your business to make it more cost efficient. Here at EngineerSupply we are always conscious of conserving. Not only to decrease business expenses but to conserve natural resources. Take small steps like shutting off the light whenever you leave or reusing old paper as scrap paper (just make sure it doesn’t have any sensitive information on it!)
As I’ve said in previous posts, Surveying Associations are a great resource for surveyors! The winter months are a great time to get involved. Many offer great services like continuing education, trade shows and business directories and that’s just some of the unique services that they offer.
These are just some of the steps you can take now to help your business flourish this year. Remember that spring will be coming soon so take advantage of these winter months to help you make the most of it.

Surveying Equipment Theft Solutions
There are several precautionary steps you can take. Take pictures of your equipment and keep a list of their make, models, and serial numbers. Provide a copy of this list to your insurance company. Make sure your insurance covers all your equipment in every area of use (in the main office, company truck and on the job site). Discuss different coverage options and premiums. Label equipment with your name and contact information. Engraving and branding are the most permanent solutions. Label all the accessories (tripod, data collector, etc…) and parts (cases, batteries, etc…). This will help track down your equipment if it falls into the wrong hands.
Secure your equipment. I have heard some ingenious ways surveyors have done this. Such contraptions include locks, chains and even spiral corkscrews used to secure dog chains. Make sure that items in your truck are locked and secured to the truck. If you need to stop at a store, park where you can see the truck from the window. If this is not possible consider leaving someone with the vehicle while you run inside.
Leica Geosystems, Sokkia, Topcon and Trimble have built-in theft deterrent features on some of their equipment, ranging from unique PIN numbers to preset areas of operation. Sokkia also offers a theft database and will keep an eye out for any unusual orders for parts, accessories and manuals for items reported stolen.
If your equipment is stolen it is important to act quickly! Most thieves will not keep stolen merchandise but will want to move it quickly. Call local surveying equipment dealers, pawn shops, the manufacturer, report the theft to the police and also check with your state surveying association. Many surveying associations have systems in place to help surveyors report stolen equipment. Trace.com and pobonline.com are online sites that can be used to search and report stolen or lost items.
Keep in mind that surveying equipment theft involves two parts, those stealing the equipment and those willing to buy it. If you are thinking about purchasing used equipment, please make sure it is not stolen. Be careful when the equipment is not sold with the original accessories from the manufacturer like manuals and cases. Check the serial number on online theft databases such as trace.com and pobonline.com. Also check with your state surveying association as they might have a theft database. If you do find stolen equipment please report it to the police.
Of course, we recommend that you purchase new surveying equipment from a reputable factory authorized dealer like EngineerSupply. You're buying a piece of mind, knowing that it comes with the manufacturer’s warranty and you know that it is not stolen.

How to Build a Fence with Ease using a Laser or Optical Instrument
EngineerSupply offers many tools that are useful for constructing a fence. Wondering how to build a fence and what tools to use? Of course, you need a strong back and the trusty pole-hole diggers, or if you're lucky a tractor with an PTO-driven Auger Attachment. There are two different options available for layout tools, laser and optical. An optical instrument such as the David White LP6-20NXL Level is set up on a tripod and should be pointed along the length of the fence. The user can then look through the eye piece to discover the correct positioning for the fence posts and then make necessary adjustments.
Another alternative is to use a construction rotary laser to lay the fence posts. Construction lasers emit a straight beam that can be used to align the fence but will need to be used with a detector when doing exterior work. By running this detector along the length of the fence you will be able to identify straight and plumb. Make sure the rotary laser you are using has a vertical feature so you can lay the instrument on its side for a vertical plane. The AGATEC 510-GC (11-0324) is a Horizontal and Vertical Rotary Laser. The self leveling feature insures that the reference line is level and plumb. It also comes standard with rechargeable batteries. A laser line generator is generally a less expensive alternative but can only be used on smaller job sites.

Handheld Spray Paint Wand
Seco Safety Vests
What most people don’t know is that bundling up too much can actually be dangerous. If people make themselves too warm the excess body heat will cause the body to produce perspiration. Perspiration will hinder the garments ability to insulate. The moisture trapped inside the clothing can then become cold, which can eventually lead to chills and even hypothermia. Perspiration will not only affect your body temperature but can cause dehydration.
Seco has taken these factors into consideration and has a brilliant solution. Seco has created safety vests made with outlast thermo-molecules. This special space technology will adapt to your body temperature and regulate it. It will provide warmth without the bulk. Specially design theromolecules absorb and release heat as needed. Because the fabric reacts to your body temperature it keeps you warm in the winter in cool in the summer. With outlast thermo-molecules you don’t need to worry about a different vest for the summer and winter. So when it comes to working outside this winter remember the key to working to staying healthy is to regulate your body temperature. Take a look at our selection of safety vests feature outlast technology and stay safe this season!

New Safety Vest Requirements
According to the FHWA anyone whose duties expose them to traffic or working on or near construction equipment are required to wear high visibility clothing. EngineerSupply carries an extended line of safety vests that meet the new government regulations, including Seco utilities vests. The Seco safety vests were created with the California DOT to comply with the new regulations.
When ordering a safety vest make sure it is compliant with ANSI/ISEA regulations. The vests are then assigned a class by their level of visibility, class 1, class 2 and class 3. (Class 3 is the most visible.) According to the new regulation, “All workers within the right-of-way of a Federal-aid highway who are exposed either to traffic… or to construction equipment within the work area shall wear high-visibility safety apparel.” that complies with ANSI/ISEA 107-2004, class 2 or 3.
It is recommended to go with the class 3 safety vests if you have any doubt as to which class you fall into. If someone is injured and they were wearing the wrong safety vest the employer could be held liable. If any of your current safety vests are faded this could be putting you or your employees at risk and it is recommended that you replace them.
This is only a reference guide and is not an exhaustive list of the new regulations. For more information on the new regulations please visit,

Inverted Marking Paint
APWA Utility Color Codes
The American Public Works Association (APWA) recommends the following guidelines be used when using marking supplies to mark underground utility line locations.
White = Proposed Excavation
Pink = Temporary Survey Markings
Red = Electric Power Lines, Cables, Conduit and Lighting Cables
Yellow = Gas, Oil, Steam, Petroleum or Gaseous Materials
Orange = Communication, Alarm or Signal Lines, Cables or Conduit
Blue = Potable Water, Water Lines
Purple = Reclaimed Water, Irrigation and Slurry Lines
Green = Sewer and Drain Lines
Why are these colors used?
Often, you will see these colors used to identify utility lines in cities and on a university campus. Sometimes city or campus utility departments will paint the tops (such as manhole lids, or storm sewer drop-inlets) of their utilities these colors before an aerial survey is flown so that the people creating the maps can identify the type of utility by color.

Crain Surveyors Series (SVR) Rectangular-Oval Leveling Rod

The Crain Surveyors Series SVR Rectangular-Oval Leveling Rod is the best we've seen in a long time. It's heavy duty, and the moment you put one in your hand you know its a real tool and not some inexpensive junk. With an included nylon carrying case, you can't go wrong with this product.
In addition to being a leveling rod on the front, the SVR rod has a measuring scale on the back (with the exception of the two-scaled rods) that allow the user to read overall height measurements at eye level, which is useful in making clearance and height measurements. Also on the back-side with the measuring scale, there are alternate 1' red and white markings that are suitable for stadia purposes.

Parallel Drawing Bars and Drafting Straightedges
Mayline Parallel Straightedges
Mayline has 6 optional straight edge lengths ranging from 30” to 60”. Above-board mounting hardware is included.
Mayline Straightedges have 2 options for wheels Delrin and Metal. The Delrin rollers are made from plastic and are best for use on materials such as Mylar. The metal rollers are made of chrome and are best for use on vellum and other paper medium. The rollers alternate the full length of the straightedge and allow the straightedge to ride smoothly over the surface of the drawing.
Mayline also has an E-Z grip feature. This is a "cap" that mounts on the top of the parallel straightedge and makes it easy to pick up and move the straightedge. This is helpful if you are using inks and do not want the straightedge to smudge your work before it dries.
Mayline also offers an optional “armor-edge”. This is a durable thin strip of metal that is on the leading edge of the straightedge. It should be used when cutting with a razor blade.
Spiroliner Parallel Straightedges
The Spiroliner is a parallel straight edge that can be used to ruling or cutting. It is made in the USA and come with Top mounts so it can be attached, partial or full length, to any drafting board. The secure mounting system insures that your straight edge will remain in alignment no matter what height you have it set at. All Spiroliner straightedges also come with a one-year warranty against manufacturer's defects.
Eliminates Smudging:
Elevated slightly above the surface of the drawing table, Spiroliner does not contact the surface of the drawing. It glides on wheels located at each end of the structural extruded aluminum blade. No rollers in the bottom of the blade to smudge or damage your drawing.
Removable Replaceable Transparent Ruling Edge:
The extruded acrylic ruling edge accommodates technical and ruling pens, lead pencils, felt tipped pens, etc. The acrylic edge is replaceable
Nick-Proof Cutting Edge:
The structural aluminum Spiroliner blade has a durable hardened anodized surface providing a cutting straightedge which is virtually "nick-proof." Relocate the transparent ruling edge to the lower groove of the blade to expose the metal cutting edge.
Dual Brakes:
Two brakes are standard on all Spiroliners. Use one to prevent parallel rule from sliding down inclined board surface, locking the other brake frees both hands for drawing.
Surveyors Field Books, Engineers Journal Books
Field books come in a variety of different formats for the many different methods of use. There are Mining Transit Books, Transit field books, Level book, field book, Engineers field books and Cross section field books. Each type of book features a different grid to make it ideal for its intended use. They also come in a variety of different sizes including Pocket and King sized as well as one job field books. The pocket sized field book is small and portable and the one job field book is ideal for students who need a smaller field book for classes, regardless if they go to a high school, college, community college or university.
